The first time I returned to the States after having been abroad a year, the first two things I noticed was the friendly nature of Californians (that I often miss) and then, how much bigger everyone was; both in height and width. Having lived in South Korea, despite being taller than the average Korean, I was average in body size in comparison so it was frustrating to be asked why Americans were so fat. I had never realised that the average American was really that much bigger.
So where have we gone wrong?
Since inspired by Thorbjörg’s 10 Years Younger in 10 Weeks to reduce my gluten intake and be relatively “sugar-free,” healthy living has become more about wellness within, instead of just a passing phase. No longer is it only about looking good, it is more about disease prevention, anti-aging, and the brain. Part of the problem in the States lies in portion sizes that are too big and the consumption of too many processed foods.
A solution to America’s and the global health problems?
Beyond sugar and gluten, there is the whole world of Paleo.
A fellow Pine Triber and I went out to lunch with Thorbjorg at PALEO in Copenhagen. When I first heard about The Paleo Diet, it sounded ridiculous. As a person who lives mostly vegan, I have not eaten beef, pork, or poultry in over eight years. Consuming large amounts of animal products, after knowing the treatment they receive in the food industry, seemed ignorant, insensitive, and gave me a negative impression of the Paleo concept.
Yet, apart from the meat eating, it was following Thorbjörg that caused me to realize the whole Paleo approach did not deviate far from what I was already doing within Thorbjörg’s book.
What is The Paleo Diet?
The Paleo Diet is based on the idea that if our cave ancestors didn’t eat it, we shouldn’t either. Initially, I was turned off as I do not want to pretend to be living back in the Stone Age. Unless you count going to the Farmer’s Market, I would not know the first thing about hunting and gathering. Let’s face it, I sometimes can’t even find my house keys.
The Paleo approach believes the problem stems from the advent of agriculture and domesticated animals, in conjunction with the introduction of “new” foods like grains, legumes, and dairy. In the States, our massive farming industry that is ruled by Monsanto saturates the stores with GMO products which are often disguised as “healthy.” As a result, both Americans and global citizens are relying too much upon highly processed and high-calorie foods, leading to our surge in health problems.
How do you eat when Paleo?
A Paleo diet requires the elimination of dairy, grains, all processed foods and sugars, legumes, starches, and alcohol.
While Thorbjörg considers herself a “soft” Paleo, when following her detox program, there are three weeks where you are essentially practicing this cave man style, Paleo diet.
When doing a cleanse, removal of these foods are essential for success during a detox. Likewise, Thorbjörg highlights the importance of feeling like your best self without all the extra additives of gluten, sugar, and dairy.
Is Paleo too extreme?
The whole Paleo movement gets one thinking, ‘how intense can we get with our diets?’ It is true, Paleo probably demands an extreme variance to your present food lifestyles and it is often misinterpreted. Not only is it ingesting more meat, fat, or nuts, it requires selecting only the best organic produce and the highest quality, grass fed meat.
